Donny Dequine Joins VC Coaching Staff 10/1
Head coach John Basanese announced the latest addition to the Valley
Christian Boy's soccer program today. Donny Dequine, who graduated
from VC in '03, replaces David Fugate who was named the Freshman girl's
coach earlier in the summer.
Dequine prepped at Valley Christian, and was named to the Mercury News'
1st Team All-CCS as a senior. In his senior year, Donny scored 12
goals from the midfield to go along with 7 assists. He captained
the team in the school's first season in the WCAL. That year, the
team finished second in league, and advanced to the Semi-finals of the
CCS playoffs. Donny scored three goals in the semi as the Warriors
fell to Burlingame 4-3.
Donny's play at Valley Christian earned him a soccer scholarship to
soccer powerhouse, Azusa Pacific. At Azusa, Donny was a regular
starter for a team that went to the National Championship Final game
twice. Donny played four years, and earned a degree from APU.
Currently, Donny continues to play soccer. He's a key player for
the San Jose Firecrackers who compete in San Jose Park and Rec's top
division. He has 20 goals and 10 assists in his Firecrackers
career, and has helped them to several championships.
Donny also serves as the Pastor of Sports Ministry at Venture Christian
Church in Los Gatos. He's actively involved in his church, and the
lives of youth.
Coach Basanese is excited to bring Donny aboard.
"There is nothing but positive things to say about Donny Dequine, and
it's always been that way. I've been fortunate to coach him, and
watch him grow as a man to the point where now I count him as a friend.
I only want the best for my kids at Valley, and I'm confident that Donny
is just that. To say that we're excited to have him would be an
understatement."
Donny is set and ready to go for the October 20th tryouts, and is
excited to get to know the student athletes!
"I
am both honored and ecstatic to be coaching this year at Valley
Christian. Valley Christian school, their soccer program, and trainer
Denise Narlesky played a vital role in my collegiate academic and soccer
achievements, and I am forever thankful. When I was apart of the Valley
Christian soccer program we went through 3 coach’s in 4 years and never
quite had a “program” like they do now. I know that for the past few
years Coach John Basanese and Donny Fugate have been driving their
players to be better individual soccer players, men of character with
class on and off the field, and have provided tools for spiritual growth
that will ultimately guide them in their future relationships and
careers. I look forward to being apart of this coaching staff as well as
giving back to a program that put a ton of time and effort into seeing
me succeed in soccer and in life,” Dequine said.
