Keeling's first beats Serra 1/29
Valley Christian 1, Junipero Serra 0
The Valley Christian
boys varsity soccer team traveled to San Mateo, CA to face the Serra
Padres on Saturday. Yet another must win situation, Valley would
look to avenge a 3-3 tie without the
WCAL's leading scorer Jeff Coggan.
It was a beautiful day
for soccer, about 68 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. The Serra field
has the same turf as VC, so the stage was set for this high paced
rematch.
The game started off
fairly evenly with VC's senior captain Garrett
Ruiz marking Serra's star player, Jay Singh. Garrett played Jay
perfectly and held him to only a few touches in the first half. Not many
scoring chances for either team, and the score stood at 0-0.
In the second half,
the sense of urgency finally began to show in the Warriors offense.
Again, pushing 3 forwards up helped VC take the lead.
Joey Stryker, whose cat used
Austin Keeling's soccer bag as a litter
box the night before, played Keeling a ball around the top of the 18
yard box. Austin dribbled around 3 defenders before finding an
opening. His shot was low and hard from 20 yards into the far post side
netting. 1-0.
The rest of the game
would stay evenly matched, with star GK Ben
Hansen making several key saves down the stretch. The Warriors would
hang onto this one to keep pace with Mitty and St. Ignatius who both won
today.
The VC varsity will
travel to Riordan on Tuesday to close out the regular season. If
the Warriors win the match, they will finish with a .500 record and
qualify for application to the CCS playoffs.
Around the league:
S.I. 1 - Bell 0
Mitty 4 - SHC 0
SF over Riordan
Game notes: For
Austin Keeling, that was his first ever goal in a Valley Christian
jersey.
