Warriors Tie Mitty at Home 1/11

After a disappointing loss at St. Ignatius two days earlier, the Valley Christian boys varsity soccer team hosted the #7 Mitty Monarchs.  Mitty, coming off a 4-2 thumping of Serra, arrived to Valley Christian to nearly perfect weather.

The game started off with end to end action, and the teams trading chances.  Senior forward Ryan Favre would put the Warriors on the scoreboard in the 30th minute.

Senior John Field took a throw-in deep in the Mitty end.  The ball went directly to Favre, who turned his defender and fired the bouncing ball with a left footed shot.  The quick shot froze the Mitty 'keeper, and flew into the side netting without hitting the ground. 1-0 VC.

The goal accentuated a great first half by the Warriors who flew to the ball on defense, and worked the ball around on offense.  The goal was not surprising to coach John Basanese.

"That goal was nearly identical to Ryan's last goal.  That was a phenomenal shot!  It's another example of him putting what we work on in practice into a game.  He's a coachable kid, and it's really starting pay off for him, and our team." Basanese said.

With about 5 minutes to play in the first half, Mitty would get the equalizer.  The Monarchs won a free kick down in the Warrior's end, and played a perfect ball into the box.  The Mitty player just barely got his head on the ball, deflecting it over Freshman 'keeper Austin Mansker.  The ball just barely missed Mansker's hands and hit the back of the net. 1-1.

The teams would head into halftime locked at a goal each.

The second half sported some of the best soccer this season as both teams tried desperately to take the lead.  The VC defense held a very dangerous Mitty team to 8 shots on goal, with Austin saving 7 of them.

The teams traded chances, but it was Mansker who came up big in the 70th minute.  A Mitty player got an open shot from around 23 yards out and bent a left footed shot around a congested penalty box.  Mansker who appeared to be screened by the players in the box, dove to his right and got his fingertips on the ball.  He deflected it just enough to send it off the post and safely to the VC defense who cleared it out.

"Austin is such a savage!  I can't believe that guy," team manager Kylie Gifford said during the game.

Coach Basanese agreed.

"I have no idea how he (Mansker) even saw the ball.  There were probably 6 people in his way, and he still made a play on it.  That's the type of save that inspires our team.  He's been big for us all year long, and today was no different.  That was a very athletic save," Basanese said.

The game was one of the most entertaining of the season to this point, but it would end deadlocked at 1-1.  For the Warriors, it keeps them undefeated this season against the very strong Mitty side.

"What can I say, if we play this way, we can compete with anyone.  It was an entertaining game to watch, and I certainly enjoyed the effort that my guys put out today.  Now we need to go to San Francisco to take on a very tough Sacred Heart Cathedral team.  I hope we can take this same intensity into that game."  Basanese concluded.

Special thanks to John Basanese Sr. for taking photos during the game.  There are several great shots, and they can be found here.
