Boys JV loses to Mitty 6-0 12/14
Valley
Christian 0, Mitty 6
The Valley Christian Boys JV soccer team traveled to Archbishop Mitty
for its third WCAL match of the year, looking for a solid showing
against this high powered, top 15 nationally ranked Mitty soccer
program. With several players ill or out hurt, it was a tough challenge.
Despite a hard effort on behalf of the Warriors, Mitty opened the
scoring in the 17th minute of the game. VC’s young defense
was kept scrambling as the Monarchs kept attacking when the Warriors
could not get the ball upfield and maintains possession. Mitty scored
twice more, then put another in the back of the net just before the half
as Mitty’s quick, fast-break offense fired shot after shot at starting
VC goalkeeper Theo Matheou, who stopped 13 of Mitty’s 17 shots on goal,
but could not stop them all.
Tenacious midfielder Josh Rothenberg had another strong game, as did
Sweeper Tyler Seaman, who continually rallied the VC defensive unit to
win the ball back and start the Warrior counter-attack. Seaman was all
over the field with a non-stop work rate and demonstrated leadership in
pushing the VC defense back upfield quickly on the counter-attack. The
VC midfield was scrambling throughout the game and found it difficult to
maintain possession as Mitty’s strong defense disrupted the Warrior game
plan; a step ahead of Valley’s ball movement.
After a brief halftime speech to rally the troops, the Warriors took the
field again determined to score, and to clamp down on Mitty’s relentless
offensive attack. The half started well, but a VC goal was not to be had
this day.
The Warriors were able to move the ball a bit more effectively, but it
was too little too late. Despite the score the Warriors continued to
press Mitty and were caught on a fast counter-attack as Mitty again
found the back of the net to go up 5-0. The Warriors firepower was
missing from this game and could not effectively attack the Mitty goal,
despite several good chances.
There were moments of brilliance by VC, but for the most part it was a
difficult defensive struggle as Mitty went ahead early and kept up solid
defensive and offensive pressure throughout the game. Mitty put away its
final goal late in the game to end the scoring.
VC’s young team - 15 freshmen and 6 sophomores - were simply outgunned
by Mitty’s precise dynamic and experienced 8 juniors and 10 sophomores.
Despite the score the Warriors fought hard, left it all on the field,
and vowed a better showing next time, a good sign for the future in a
tough league.
