VC 0 - 3 Gilroy. 11/26

The JV Boys were ready for their first game. They have been preparing for this for the past 3 weeks and it was finally here. After a long focused warm-up, the game got under way. Before Coach Ronnie Jenkins could even find his seat on the bench, 2 minutes into the game, the referee awarded Gilroy a penalty, for an apparent foul by VC sweeper Kevin Tarangioli. The Gilroy man stepped up and slotted the ball past VC keeper Nick Nielson; 1 - 0 Gilroy.

The remainder of the first half was a nervous game as VC found it hard to find rhythm and to keep hold of the ball. There were spells of how VC can really play throughout the half, but nothing significant enough to contribute. As Gilroy dominated, they continued to put pressure on the VC defense, ultimately leading to 2 more goals. The first of which was claimed to be offside, but there was no call from the referee and the goal stood.

The third Gilroy goal came again from high pressure on VC and a shot from the Gilroy striker hit a pothole on its way to goal, wrong footing VC keeper Nielson, and dribbling into the goal. 3 - 0 Gilroy;

End of 1st half.

The second half saw a "like new" VC team step onto the field. They were first to the ball, aggressive, and they looked like a team. VC started to put pressure on Gilroy from the start and it remained that way for the rest of the game. Gilroy's attack was muted by VC's classy play through the midfield, which led to goal scoring opportunities. One of which fell to George Fahmey. After some quick passing on the left side of the field, Fahmey found himself breaking through the Gilroy defence and one on one with the keeper. As a defender bore down on him, Fahmey took his chance and directed the ball towards the far post; the VC bench rose anticipating the ball in the back of the net, but
instead saw the ball trickle wide of the post! Unlucky chance for
Fahmey and VC. Despite dominating the whole second half, VC were unable to score, and Gilroy's 3 goals from the first half were enough to win the game for Gilroy and to hand VC a loss for their first game.

Every player was able to contribute and they can all be proud about the performance they put in.

"I am proud of them, they battled well and showed that they can play. They can go away knowing that the score was a little unfair and did not reflect how they really played. Overall, even though a loss, it was very positive game" Coach Ronnie Jenkins.
